Welcome back to the start of a new school year at Danygraig! We hope you have had a wonderful Summer break and are ready for an exciting new term! Please find below details of the work that your child’s class will be doing during this term. We have also suggested ways in which you can help your child at home. If you have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Our topic this term is ‘Stargazers’.

The children will be discovering the awe and wonder of the solar system. The children will have opportunities to decide on their learning through pupil lead questioning. They could be working on topics in relation to our ‘Stargazers’ topic such as: ·

• How to survive and thrive in a different environment on an unknown planet.
• Investigate the requirements and skills needed to be a NASA astronaut.
• We have already experienced and explored the vast size of planets and galaxies in our solar system during our ‘Wonder Dome’ topic launch.

Homework will be given to the children every week, to be completed online through their Hwb accounts or in their homework books by the following week. Homework will be alternate weeks of literacy and maths. Please see your child’s class teacher if you have any problems accessing the work. Please ensure your child’s homework book is kept safe.

In maths, some of the topics we will be looking at are: number and place value, written addition and subtraction, problem solving, reasoning, mental addition and subtraction, decimals and their equivalence to fractions, mental multiplication and division, measurement, geometry and properties of shapes.

Thrilling Thursdays

This term the children will be completing a carousel of activities with all four PS3 teachers. The will be completing the activities every Thursday afternoon over a two-week period. The activities are:

Miss Griffiths - PE

Mr Field - Outdoor Learning

Mrs Smedley - Modern Foreign Languages

Mr Byrne - Digital Learning

Our class will start PE with Miss Griffiths on 25th Sept and then every fortnight afterwards. 

They will also have drama/dance sessions with Mrs Bateman every Friday.

The Year 5 children will also have an opportunity to take part in swimming lessons. 

Dojo messages and information will continue this year in the class groups. Letters will be sent for those who have not yet joined for you to join our class. Please follow the instructions to download and join our class through the app. This is a simple and effective way of getting in touch, receiving information and seeing how your son/daughter is getting on through dojo points and posted videos.

Ways in which you could help at home:

Please listen to your child reading at home

Visit the local library to choose books relevant to topics being studied at school

Discuss and talk through your child’s homework helping them with strategies and methods to solve it independently

Practise their tables through TT Rockstars and help them to problem solve.
