Please find below details of the work that your child’s class will be doing during this term. We have also suggested ways in which you can help your child at home. If you have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with your child’s class teacher.

Thank you for your continued support,

Class: Year 5/6F          Term: Spring Term – 2025

Main areas of study:

Our topic this term is ‘Lights, Camera, ACTION!’. Children will have opportunities to decide on their learning through pupil-lead questioning. They could be working on topics in relation to our Lights, Camera, ACTION! topic such as:

  • Understand the history of film making, cinematography and other types of media.
  • Investigate how movies and animations are created
  • Become inspired by local actors and actresses
  • Create our own short animations and films using these techniques.
  •

Homework

In Year 4/5 we are trialling using Microsoft Teams for homework assignments. The children will be set a homework task, with a deadline attached to it. Once completed, they can submit their work and the class teacher will be notified. If you have any problems accessing the work, please let us know. The homework will alternate between literacy and maths.

In maths, we will be looking at: number and place value, written addition and subtraction, problem-solving, reasoning and algebra, mental addition and subtraction, decimals, percentages and their equivalence to fractions, problem-solving, reasoning and algebra, mental multiplication and division, measurement, mental multiplication and division, fractions, ratio and proportion, geometry, statistics, properties of shapes, worded problem-solving and reasoning.

PE lessons will return and there will be opportunities to go outside and explore our physical well-being through activities and games.

Our PE lessons will be every Friday with Mrs Bateman, who is also developing their drama/oracy skills.

Please can the children bring in/ wear suitable sports clothing ie: tracksuit bottoms/shorts/ t-shirt

Dojo messages and information will continue this year in the class groups. Letters will be sent to those who have not joined yet for you to join our class community. Please follow the instructions to download and join our class community through the app. This is a simple and effective way of getting in touch, receiving information and seeing how your son/daughter is getting on through dojo points and posted videos.

Ways in which you can help at home:

  • Please listen to your child reading at home every night (your child will have a reading book and a reading record diary for you to make comments).
  • Visit the local library to choose books relevant to topics being studied at school.
  • Discuss and talk about your child’s homework, helping them with strategies and methods to solve it independently.
  • Talk to your child about the range of geographical features in their locality & globally.
  • Help your children by listening to them read, practice their times tables through TT Rockstars and help them to solve problems.

Christmas Traditions

In the Autumn term we learnt about Christmas traditions in Wales. One of the traditions we learnt about was Calennig. The children made their own version of a Calennig using oranges, cloves and leaves from around the school.

Making Calennig

Designing cars

As part of our Autumn topic, the children made their own battery powered cars.
